Last Saturday, during an anti-war protest, physics professor Mike Weissman and statistician Ellen Fireman were slapped with a $75 ticket each for jaywalking after they stepped off the curb to leaflet a car. If the police are concerned about jaywalkers, they really ought to see the mayhem in the Green and Wright intersection. How odd that that isn't their priority.

About the same time, a Cop I Know related the story about going on an "alcohol shift" at work; they'd busted four people at four different establishments for serving and underage plant. The ticket for the offense is $500; and at two of the establishments, the guilty waitperson lost his/her job after their boss found out about the ticket. $500, and no job -- all for putting a beer in front of an 18 year old.

The day after this, the Cop I Know was in court at the trial of a man she'd arrested for beating his wife. The judge handed him a $100 fine; that was all.

So, to recap: in the USA, stepping off the curb during a protest will cost you $75; beating your wife, $100; and serving a beer to a minor, $500 and your job. Cheers!
