The UI wants to balance its budget on the backs of its cheapest instructional labor: TAs and non-tenure-track faculty. In an article in yesterday's News Gazette, some figures for jobs lost as a result of the budget cuts were given (scroll to end). You'll notice that as the projected cut increases, the proportion of TA jobs lost rises (15.6% at $51.2M vs. 34.5% at $77.1M). Moreover, when the number of course sections cut increases by 84% (from 650 at $51.2M cut to 1200 at $87.9M cut), the number of TA jobs cut increases by a factor of 3.75 (from 120 to 450) and the number of NTTs cut increases by a factor of 4 (from 100 to 400) -- meaning that the teaching burden will be shifted heavily onto the remaining TAs and NTTs, who already have precious little time to devote to their students.
