Weirton Steel (Weirton, WV) announced last week its plans to cut health and life insurance benefits to its retirees. Yesterday, a judge upheld Weirton's decision. The Independant Steelworkers Union seems resigned to the outcome (a disappointing but expected development), framing it as the national issue which it is. What remains of Weirton's self-slashed workforce is still on the job. Meanwhile, "we have no leverage and no negotiating power," Lacik [a retired supervisor] said. "We’re trying to suck up and get whatever we can."
